The White Ferns lost their opening match of cricket’s T20 World Cup in England on Monday, after the West Indies beat them by seven wickets in Southampton. New Zealand scored 162 runs for six wickets in their 20 overs, with Brooke Halliday making the team’s highest score of 40 from 32 balls. The West Indies then reached 163 for three with just one ball left in the match.
The defeat was especially disappointing for New Zealand because they are the defending champions. Their bowlers created several chances to take wickets, but the team dropped six catches in the field. Wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze also missed a good chance to stump a West Indies batter.
New Zealand captain Melie Kerr said it was a tough day for those mistakes to happen in such an important game. She said the missed chances hurt the team a lot. West Indies opening batter Shemaine Campbelle was named player of the match after scoring 90 not out from 62 balls.
The result gives the White Ferns a difficult start to the tournament. Their next match will be on Wednesday, also in Southampton, against Sri Lanka.
