Canterbury have won the Ranfurly Shield for a record 18th time after beating Otago 19-15 in a thrilling match in Dunedin. The victory means the famous trophy is heading back to Christchurch. Otago had won the Shield from Canterbury last season and successfully defended it three times. Canterbury’s strong defence helped them regain the trophy in a match full of dramatic moments.
Canterbury led 12-8 at half-time after tries from captain Brodie McAlister and lock Jamie Hannah. McAlister scored again after the break to give Canterbury a 19-8 lead. Otago then fought back when flanker Lucas Casey scored a try while Canterbury had only 13 players on the field. The situation became even more unusual when referee Ben O’Keeffe accidentally collided with McAlister, who had to leave the field for a head injury check.
Otago scored another try through Benjamin Lopas with six minutes left, making the score 19-15. The final minutes were chaotic, with both teams making important plays and mistakes. With just 40 seconds remaining, Canterbury flanker Dom Gardiner won the ball back for his team. Canterbury were then able to run down the clock and secure the victory. Canterbury will now defend the Ranfurly Shield against Bay of Plenty in Christchurch on Saturday.
