A Sherpa guide has been found alive after spending a 6 days on Mount Everest. Dawa Sherpa was discovered on Thursday on snowy slopes near the Khumbu Icefall, just above Everest base camp. The 57-year-old was later flown to Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital.
Dawa had been missing since around 29 May while descending the mountain. He was last known to be near a place called Yellow Band above Camp 3, which is about 7,200 metres high. Everest base camp is much lower, at about 5,300 metres.
When he was found, Dawa was crawling on the snow. He was taken to HAMS Hospital, where he was treated for frostbite, dehydration and problems with his thighs. The hospital said he was stable and recovering.
His family had already started funeral rituals because they thought he had died. They were very relieved to see him again, but they were also upset about the delay in rescue efforts. The team that found him was linked to the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, which helps set up and remove climbing equipment on Everest.
