The New Zealand Breakers have found their new head coach, and he comes with some serious credentials.
Gordon Herbert has been appointed to lead the Breakers for the next two years. Herbert is best known for coaching Germany to the 2023 FIBA World Cup title, making him one of the most successful basketball coaches in the world.
Before taking the Breakers job, Herbert had been working with Bayern Munich in Germany and also serves as the head coach of the Canadian national team, a role he will continue alongside his NBL duties.
Breakers president of basketball operations Dillon Boucher said Herbert was exactly what the team was looking for, describing him as a “world-class strategist” with a strong record of winning at the highest level.
Herbert replaces Finn Petteri Koponen, who left the club after two seasons that saw the Breakers finish ninth and then seventh. For a team with a history of winning championships, those results were disappointing.
Club chairman Marc Mitchell said Herbert was a key piece of the puzzle in rebuilding the team into a championship contender.
Herbert is expected to arrive in Auckland in August and plans to bring an assistant coach with him.
