The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new rules for the 2027 Academy Awards, including guidance on artificial intelligence in films. The organisation, which runs the Oscars, said on Saturday that AI tools will not automatically help or harm a film’s chance of being nominated. However, judges will consider how much human creativity was at the centre of the work.
The Academy said performances must be clearly carried out by humans, with their consent, to be considered for acting awards. This means an AI-made likeness of an actor would not simply count as an acting performance on its own. Screenplays must also be written by humans to be eligible for Oscar prizes.
There are also major changes to the international film category. Films that win top awards at major festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Berlin, Busan and Sundance may now be eligible, even if they are not chosen by a country as its official entry. The Academy said international films will be credited as the nominee, rather than the country or region, and the filmmaker will accept the award.
The acting rules have also changed so that actors can be nominated more than once in the same category for different films. The Academy also clarified rules for original songs used in end credits. Academy leaders said the changes are part of a yearly effort to improve the Oscars and reflect the growing global film community.
