The Interislander ferry Aratere made its last trip from Picton to Wellington today, ending 26 years of service across Cook Strait.
Crowds gathered on a sunny morning in Picton to farewell the ship, with the Kaitaki ferry sounding a final horn in tribute. Some passengers even traveled from far away just to be part of the historic journey.
The Aratere first arrived in New Zealand in the late 1990s. It was unique because it could carry railway wagons as well as vehicles and people, using special tracks built into the ferry and wharf. However, the ship faced many challenges during its career. In June 2024, it ran aground outside Picton after its autopilot steering system could not be turned off. Back in 2006, rough seas caused cargo to shift, injuring four passengers and one crew member.
Its retirement will make way for two brand-new rail ferries, which are expected to arrive in 2029. These modern ships will each be able to carry 40 wagons and will use updated port facilities in Picton.
For many, this farewell marked the end of an era. The Aratere may not have been perfect, but it carried thousands of people and goods across Cook Strait for more than two decades.
