U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska for peace talks on the war in Ukraine, but after nearly three hours of discussions, the leaders left without reaching an agreement.
The talks were meant to find a way to stop the fighting in Ukraine, but President Trump said, “There is no deal until there is a deal,” explaining that the two sides had not come to a final agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited to the meeting but will speak with President Trump on Monday in Washington, D.C.
At the end of the press conference, both presidents hinted at meeting again, possibly in Moscow. President Trump said visiting Russia might cause controversy, but he didn’t rule it out.
Soon after the meeting, President Trump called President Zelensky to discuss what had happened. Meanwhile, leaders around the world reacted. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the effort but said Ukraine must be part of any future talks. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and EU President Ursula von der Leyen, agreed that Ukraine must be included in the next round of discussions.
President Zelensky also responded, saying that no decisions about Ukraine should be made without Ukraine’s involvement, especially about its territory.
During the Alaska event, both President Putin and President Trump made short speeches but refused to answer questions from journalists. President Putin said the talks were respectful and that he truly wanted peace. President Trump said they had agreed on many points, but did not share details.
