A drought in Taranaki has been classified as a medium-scale event, Agriculture Minister Todd McClay announced.
Farmers and growers in the region are struggling with hot, dry conditions and limited rainfall, leading to a shortage of pasture and feed. Many have been forced to use stored feed or sell livestock earlier than planned.
To help, the government is providing $30,000 to rural support groups that assist farmers on the ground. The Ministry for Primary Industries is also monitoring the situation closely. Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson said MPI has been meeting with farmers in southern and coastal Taranaki to offer support and advice.
With this classification, farmers can access additional assistance, including tax relief and possible Rural Assistance Payments through the Ministry of Social Development.
