The new superhero film Spider-Man: Brand New Day had the second-biggest opening weekend in cinema history, earning around NZ$1.6 billion in global ticket sales.
The film was beaten only by Avengers: Endgame, which brought in more than NZ$2 billion when it was released in 2019.
The movie, which starred real-life married couple Tom Holland and Zendaya, also set the second-highest opening weekend record in North America, taking in around NZ$570 million there alone. Reviews of the film had been largely positive, with many critics saying it featured Tom Holland’s best performance as Spider-Man so far.
Marvel Studios was delighted with the result, as some of its recent films had not performed as well as hoped. Studio president Kevin Feige described the opening weekend as “truly phenomenal” for the franchise.
Brand New Day was set several years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, which came out in 2021. The film followed Peter Parker as he continued to protect his city from danger, all while trying to keep his secret identity as Spider-Man hidden from the world.
