England ended the first day of the cricket test match against New Zealand in a strong position at Hagley Oval.
Late wickets, including a crucial dismissal of Kane Williamson for 93, left the Black Caps at 319/8 at stumps. Glenn Phillips (41*) and Tim Southee (10*) were unbeaten as England’s bowlers looked to wrap up the innings early on day two.
England elected to bowl first after winning the toss, and their decision paid off immediately.
Devon Conway was dismissed in just the second over, caught and bowled by Gus Atkinson. Captain Tom Latham played a brisk innings of 47 but fell shortly after, caught behind. Kane Williamson, returning from injury, anchored New Zealand’s innings with a calm and classy performance, bringing up his 36th test half-century.
Rachin Ravindra provided steady support before being dismissed for 34, while Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell, and debutant Nathan Smith all fell cheaply. England’s Shoaib Bashir was the standout bowler, claiming 4/69, including the vital wicket of Williamson as he neared a century.
This series marks the debut of the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, honouring cricket legends Martin Crowe and Graham Thorpe. A moving ceremony before play featured Crowe’s family and Thorpe’s former teammate Michael Atherton presenting the trophy.
