A remarkable house called “Chodge” in Waikato, New Zealand, has won the Supreme Award at the 2024 Architectural Designers New Zealand awards.
The design by Darryl Church of DCA Architects of Transformation impressed judges with its “translucent skin” walls and ceilings, which allow natural light to fill the space during the day. At night, interior lights create a soft glow that can be seen from outside, blending the house seamlessly with its surroundings.
Held in Rotorua, the ADNZ awards highlighted ten winning designs in various categories, including homes, townhouses, and commercial spaces. The “Chodge” house also won the National Award for Residential Interiors and the New Home category (150-300m²), reflecting its innovative and eco-friendly design, which uses Passive Haus principles for energy efficiency.
Other winners included a sustainable off-grid house by Darren O’Neil in Canterbury, described as “jaw-dropping,” and a Mount Maunganui beach house renovation by Jon McAlpine, designed to accommodate up to 30 family members during summer.
From cozy retreats to commercial architecture, this year’s ADNZ awards celebrated sustainable and creative architecture across New Zealand. The designs exemplify a balance between aesthetic appeal and environmental responsibility, marking new milestones in New Zealand’s architectural landscape.
