The New Zealand government is launching an artificial intelligence chatbot called Gov-GPT, modelled after Chat-GPT.

Technology Minister Judith Collins introduced the project during the Aotearoa AI Summit in Auckland. The chatbot, developed by Callaghan Innovation, will help New Zealanders easily find government information.

Gov-GPT is part of a larger effort to create a “digital front door” for citizens to access government services quickly and easily. In addition to the chatbot, Callaghan Innovation is launching a program to help businesses adopt AI. This program will provide research, expert help, and possible grants to support AI use in businesses.

The government aims to boost AI awareness and use in New Zealand, noting that AI could add $76 billion to the country’s economy by 2038. Collins emphasised the importance of helping businesses take advantage of AI as it becomes more popular worldwide. Both the chatbot and business program are funded through existing government resources.
