US and Israel Strike Iran

The United States and Israel carried out air strikes on Iran on 28 February 2026, hitting sites in the capital city, Tehran, and other areas.

Leaders from both countries said the attacks were aimed at stopping what they believe is a serious threat. Iran responded by firing missiles towards Israel and at US military bases in nearby Gulf countries.

US President Donald Trump said American forces had begun “major combat operations”. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the two countries were working together. Iranian officials said they would defend their country and would not ignore the attacks.

During the strikes, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed. Iranian state media confirmed his death and announced a period of national mourning. A temporary council has been set up to help lead the country until a new supreme leader is chosen.

Explosions were reported in several cities, and flights across parts of the Middle East were cancelled or delayed for safety reasons. Israel said many of the missiles fired at it were stopped by its air defence systems. Some nearby countries also reported hearing blasts.

Iran and Israel have been rivals for many years, and tensions have grown over Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran says its nuclear work is for peaceful uses, such as making electricity. However, the US and Israel are concerned that it could be used to build nuclear weapons.

Leaders around the world have reacted in different ways. Some have supported the strikes, while others have warned that the situation could lead to a wider conflict. Experts say the coming days will be important for the future of the region.

Our school library has changed in several ways this term. New shelves now display graphic novels, history books, and sport biographies in separate sections, making titles easier to find. A quieter reading corner has also been set up for students who prefer to read on their own. Although some people first noticed the new furniture, the most important change is that more students have started borrowing books and spending time in the library. The librarian said the aim was to make the library more welcoming to different readers.
