New Zealand’s surfers faced a tough day in the waters off Tahiti, resulting in their elimination in round 2 of the competition.

Raglan’s Billy Stairmand and Gisborne’s Saffi Vette both lost their matches.

Billy Stairmand, a 34-year-old surfer who also competed in the Tokyo Olympics, lost to Filipe Toledo from Brazil. Toledo scored an impressive 9.67 on his best wave, while Stairmand’s best wave was an 8.17.

In contrast, Saffi Vette, a 22-year-old from Gisborne, faced very calm conditions in her match against Portugal’s Yolanda Hopkins. Vette managed a total score of only 1.27, with her best wave being 0.67. Hopkins also struggled but did slightly better with a total score of 4.67 and a best wave of 3.67.

Both New Zealand surfers gave it their best but were ultimately defeated by their opponents.
