A powerful cold snap has brought snow, sleet and freezing temperatures to parts of New Zealand, causing school closures, road problems and travel warnings. The icy weather hit Dunedin, other parts of Otago and Wellington this week, with police urging people to avoid unnecessary travel.
Dunedin residents woke up to a rare winter scene as snow settled across parts of the city. While many people enjoyed the unusual weather, the conditions created challenges on the roads. More than 20 crashes were reported, with several vehicles sliding on icy surfaces, although no serious injuries were recorded.
Schools across Dunedin were closed, along with some early childhood centres, while transport services were cancelled. Some major roads were also shut for a time before reopening later in the day. Drivers were warned to slow down, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and expect delays.
Wellington also experienced a rare winter surprise, with sleet and snow falling across parts of the city, including the CBD and nearby suburbs. Snow is uncommon in Wellington, so many residents were surprised to see the capital covered in wintry weather for the first time in several years.
Officials also prepared for increased electricity use as people used more heating to stay warm. The cold snap is expected to continue before conditions gradually improve later in the week.
