The Oly Whites have started their Olympic campaign with a strong victory, winning their opening match against Guinea 2-1. Matt Garbett and Ben Waine scored the goals for New Zealand. Garbett put New Zealand ahead with a goal in the 25th minute of the first half, despite having missed a penalty just two minutes earlier.

Guinea equalized in the 73rd minute with a goal from Amadou Diawara, who drilled the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. However, New Zealand quickly regained the lead four minutes later, when Ben Waine scored a brilliant goal with assists from Riley Bidois and Lachlan Bayliss.

Despite the 30°C heat and an additional 11 minutes of extra time, the Oly Whites maintained their lead. This victory against the 74th-ranked Guinea side keeps their playoff hopes alive in a tough group that also includes hosts France and the USA. France and the USA are strong competitors, but New Zealand’s performance in this match shows their potential to advance in the tournament.
