A balloon from North Korea dropped trash on the presidential compound in central Seoul, South Korean officials reported today.
This is the second time since May that North Korea has sent balloons carrying waste into South Korean territory as part of a campaign meant to annoy and provoke.
South Korea’s presidential security service confirmed that the items found this morning were not dangerous. It is unclear whether President Yoon Suk Yeol was present when the balloon’s contents landed in the area.
The North has resumed these “trash balloon” tactics, which were commonly used during the Cold War, to spread frustration and propaganda. Local reports say today’s balloons also contained leaflets criticising President Yoon and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, along with the rubbish.
Experts suggest that while North Korea may be using GPS to improve accuracy, the country likely lacks the technology to target specific locations with precision. In July, a similar balloon incident raised concerns about the safety of key facilities, though no one was hurt.
Officials are now monitoring the situation closely to prevent future incidents and ensure public safety.
