New Zealand’s first fully electric fire truck was revealed this morning at Christchurch Airport.

The Rosenbauer RT model will replace the airport’s main diesel-powered emergency vehicle. Airport officials also announced plans to expand their electric response fleet in 2026.

The new truck runs entirely on electricity but has a small backup generator to recharge the battery if needed during long emergencies. Fire chief Peter Moore explained that the truck offers more space, better safety features, and a nearly silent operation. This allows firefighters to communicate more easily and reduces harmful diesel emissions.

Moore called the truck “the future of firefighting”, highlighting how the cleaner technology improves both safety and efficiency. The airport is already using a fully electric corporate vehicle fleet and aims for all emergency response vehicles to be electric by 2035.

Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson said a second electric fire truck, the e-Panther, will arrive in 2026. He emphasised that safety remains the airport’s top priority while also working toward a zero-emissions future.

Senior firefighter Trevor Casey praised the truck’s smooth handling and smart features, saying it will improve response times and overall performance.
