Melbourne is now Australia’s most populated city, taking the title from Sydney for the first time in over 100 years!
This is because Melbourne’s boundaries were expanded to include a new area called Melton, which has lots of new people moving there.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Melbourne now has 18,700 more people than Sydney, with a population of 4,875,400 in June 2021. But some people in Sydney are saying it’s just a “technicality” and that when you look at the bigger regions around the cities, Sydney is still bigger.
However, the government thinks that Melbourne will eventually be bigger than Sydney in the future. This is because lots of people are moving to Melbourne from other countries, and it’s becoming more diverse.
Melbourne is also attractive to migrants because it has lots of job and education opportunities, and it’s more affordable than Sydney. Did you know that Melbourne used to be Australia’s biggest city a long time ago, during the gold rush in the late 19th Century?
