Two new measles cases have been confirmed in Wellington, both linked to local high schools, bringing New Zealand’s total to 10 cases. Health New Zealand says hundreds of people may have been exposed, especially at Wellington College and Wellington Girls’ College.
At Wellington Girls’ College, four staff members and 60 students have been identified as close contacts.
One case has been linked to overseas travel. Most others appear to be connected to a “high-risk exposure event” on the Bluebridge Ferry on 3 October.
The confirmed cases are spread across several regions: three in Wellington, two in Auckland, two in Manawatū, and one each in Northland, Taranaki and Nelson.
Health officials are contacting those who may have been exposed, but due to the large number of people, it could take some time. A list of places where people may have come into contact with the virus is still being updated.
Measles is very contagious and can lead to serious health problems. People can spread the virus even before they feel sick. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, sore red eyes, runny nose, and a rash.
