Hunt for New Zealand’s Weirdest Pie

New Zealand bakers are being challenged to create the country’s weirdest pie as part of a competition raising money for the Cancer Society. Wellington baker Joe Player and Auckland bakery Ashby Pies will run the challenge during September. Bakers can create unusual flavour combinations while also competing for the title of “The Meanest Pie”.

The bakers can choose up to nine ingredients from a list of 15, including leek, bacon, miso, garlic, potato, feta, mustard, blackberry, ginger, pork and tomato. Vegetarian pies are also allowed. Player says there are many possible combinations, with one of his favourite ideas being banana satay with candied almond.

The competition was created after Player was diagnosed with stage four cancer. During his treatment, he received support from the Cancer Society and wanted to find a way to help the organisation raise more money. Bakers can enter their ideas through the Cancer Society New Zealand website.

Once the pies are made, people will be able to choose their favourite using the Mean Pie app. One dollar from every pie sold will be donated to the Cancer Society. The competition is designed to be fun while supporting an important cause.

Room 6 was preparing a display for the school library. The students sorted books into groups and wrote short labels for each shelf. Their teacher said the display should be organised so readers could find topics easily. After the afternoon bell, the class stood back and looked at their work. The shelves were neat, the labels were clear, and the display made the library feel welcoming.
