Christchurch musician Holly Arrowsmith has won the 2025 APRA Best Country Music Song Award for her song “Blue Dreams.” The award was presented at the Country Music Honours in Gore on Friday, marking her second win in a row and third overall.

“Blue Dreams” was inspired by Arrowsmith’s first year as a parent. The song shares the tiredness, challenges, and emotions of caring for a baby while also staying true to her music. She and her husband, woodworker Michael Gilling, welcomed their first child recently.

In interviews, Arrowsmith explained that motherhood changed her life and made her reflect deeply on who she is. She also spoke openly about her struggles with anxiety and depression, which are reflected in the songs on her album, also titled Blue Dreams.

Although performing these songs can be emotional, Arrowsmith says it’s also healing. Sharing her music helps others connect and feel understood.

The award ceremony kicked off the 10-day Tussock Country Music Festival. Arrowsmith performed alongside well-known artists Tami Neilson and Mel Parsons.

This year’s event also introduced a new award: the Country Music Honour for Contribution to Country Music. The first-ever winner was Tami Neilson, praised for her powerful voice and big role in growing country music in Aotearoa.

Neilson will release her new album Neon Cowgirl in July. It includes popular songs and special guests like Neil Finn and Ashley McBryde.

Another highlight was the MLT Songwriting Award, which went to Nicola Mitchell, Byllie-Jean Zeta, and Em-Hayley Walker (also known as Theia or Te Kaahu) for their original song Wā.
