The Gore District Council has declared the town’s water safe to drink again after three days of tests showed nitrate levels below the national safety limit. The “do-not-drink” notice was first issued on Friday after a routine test found too much nitrate in the water.
Officials say the problem came from one of the town’s wells, which still has higher-than-usual nitrate levels. The council will work with Environment Southland and the national water regulator, Taumata Arowai, to find out what caused the spike.
High nitrate levels in drinking water can be harmful, especially for pregnant women and babies fed with formula. Some international studies have also linked nitrates to bowel cancer, even at low levels.
The council reminded people that if their tap water has already been used for showers or flushing toilets, it’s probably safe to drink. If not, it’s best to run the tap for a few minutes before drinking or brushing teeth.
For those who still feel unsure, a water tanker will remain at the Eccles Street Playground for a few more days so people can collect safe drinking water there.
Officials say they will keep monitoring the water to make sure it stays safe.
