A British coffee lover known as Flat White Frank is travelling across New Zealand in search of the world’s best flat white. So far, he’s visited Wellington and Auckland and plans to head next to Christchurch and Queenstown.
Frank, 28, is a content creator who doesn’t share his real name. He spent his twenties working in coffee shops and with coffee companies in London before combining his love for coffee with making videos. He launched his social media account in late 2024 to review flat whites.
In Wellington, Frank visited a café called Frank’s, where he was impressed by a special Colombian coffee with passionfruit notes, calling it “insane.” He gave the café’s house espresso an 8 out of 10.
Frank now has nearly 30,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok. His videos are popular because they are simple and focus on how the coffee tastes, not how it’s made.
He has mostly reviewed coffees in the UK and Ireland but is now testing brews in New Zealand and plans to visit Australia next. He’s especially interested in the friendly debate over where the flat white was invented. Some say New Zealand, others say Melbourne, Australia.
Although Frank’s favourite flat white so far is still one from a café in London, he says everyday coffee in New Zealand is much better than in the UK. Even small or unexpected places serve decent coffee, he says.
