Eden Park, New Zealand’s largest stadium, has received approval to host up to 12 concerts a year, doubling its previous limit.
This decision, backed by overwhelming public support, aims to attract major global artists and benefit Auckland’s economy. The announcement comes after 94% of over 2,000 public submissions favored more live music events at the iconic venue.
Nick Sautner, Eden Park’s chief executive, described the change as a “landmark moment” for the entertainment scene. He emphasised that more concerts would create thousands of jobs, bring visitors to the city, and offer fans the chance to enjoy world-class performances close to home. A recent example of the stadium’s impact was the three Coldplay concerts, which attracted 160,000 fans and boosted local businesses significantly.
Residents near Eden Park are also celebrating. Shona Tagg of the Eden Park Residents Association said that most locals support the move, with only a small minority opposing it. She noted that concerts are planned well in advance, making it easier for neighbours to prepare for the events.
Local businesses are thrilled as well. Steve Armitage, chief executive of Hospitality New Zealand, highlighted the positive impact on restaurants, bars, and hotels. Research shows that every dollar spent on live events brings $3.20 in benefits to the wider community.
