Dunedin is getting ready for a rare total solar eclipse that is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the city in 2028.
The eclipse will happen on 22 July 2028, when the moon moves in front of the sun and blocks its light for almost three minutes. Parts of southern New Zealand will become dark during the daytime.
Scientists say the event is especially exciting because the last total solar eclipse visible from Dunedin happened in 1163, before humans arrived in New Zealand.
Hotels in Dunedin are already receiving bookings, with some places expected to fill up years before the event. Around 35,000 visitors are predicted to travel to the city.
The eclipse will happen soon after Matariki, the Māori New Year, which celebrates the night sky and stars.
Dunedin plans to hold a special festival combining science, culture and astronomy to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event.
