The New Zealand duck shooting season started on Saturday.
The mallard and grey duck shooting season this year will last until the end of May. Pheasant, quail and other game bird species have a longer season, finishing in August.
This year people are uncertain about the number and condition of the ducks due to the dry summer most of New Zealand has had.
Hunters must hold a valid license and police check hunters throughout the duck shooting season.
More than 40,000 hunters are expected to be out this morning for the opening of the duck season.
