Today is Formal Friday.

Today we are going to learn from NZ author Paula Green and create a poem about clouds.

Cloudsville
Maybe there is a little city
in the clouds where everyone
and swims in fluffy swimming pools,
eats cloudy floss and cloudy buns
and climbs very tall ladders to
pick cloudy plums.
When it’s cold, it’s puffy mittens
the nana in the cloud is always knitting,
and when it’s hot it’s ice-cream soda
the cloud granddad is fizzing and floating.

Write a made-up news story about your school. Think of a story that is almost believable but a bit silly too.

Remember to include: • a heading and sub-headings; • interesting word choices to make people want to read it; • quotes from people who were there.

Remember a Newspaper article answers the questions – WHAT, WHO, WHEN in the first sentence. It then moves on to the WHERE, HOW and WHY.
When you have finished writing your newspaper article share it with a friend.

Today is Monday 30th March, 2020. In our learning today we are going to listen to a school journal, write a creative story and start our study of fractions.

After reading the link above, listen to the story about Nancy Wake describing her life and role in World War II.

1. Once you have listened to the story answer these questions.
a) What does “hailed as a hero” mean?
b) Why are heroes “decorated”?
c) What does it mean to “recognise” acts of courage?
d) Name a modern New Zealand hero. How was he or she hailed or decorated?
2. Compare Nancy Wake with another New Zealand hero, for example, Charles Upham, Willie Apiata, or others who have been decorated for acts of heroism in peacetime. They could create a Venn Diagram comparing the actions between the two heroes. Compare what they did, why they did it and how they did it.

# WEEKEND LEARNING – Treehoppers

This week we heard the news that a news species of Treehopper has been named after Lady Gaga – Read the article here.

Therefore we thoughts we might spend some time learning more about these rather cool insects.

Below is a list of websites and resources you could visit to learn more about treehoppers. You definitely don’t have to look at them all, just a few will do. You might even have books at home you could read to find more information.
After looking at the resources we have a list of activities you could do. Once again you don’t have to do them all. Select one or two that you would like to complete.

## ACTIVITIES

1. Create a Fact Card with 10 facts about Treehoppers. If you want you could use CANVA to present your facts or make your own on an A4 piece of paper.
2. Design your own Treehopper. Plan it out on paper first. Make sure the helmet you design is spectacular.
3. Write down key information about Treehoppers. A bit about their history, design and where they live. Then use your writing to create a video in Lumen 5.
4. Create your own Treehopper. You could use cardboard, paper, recycling, lego to create your own creature. Make sure you give it a cool scientific name.
5. Create a short information video about Treehoppers.
a) Use Adobe Spark if you dont have a video maker.
6. Design your own treehopper in Minecraft.
7. Create a Wakelet with resources about Treehoppers. Try and include a range of resources. Once you have done this paste the link to your Wakelet in the comments below.
8. Create a Prezi of a special kind of Treehopper.
9. Write a poem about a Treehoppers
10. Make a Kahoot about Treehoppers and then share in the comments.
11. Create a crossword about Treehoppers using WordMint.
12. Make a pamphlet or brochure about Treehoppers.
13. Make a Venn diagram to compare a Treehopper with another insect.

# WRITING – Write your highs and lows for this week

Today you are going to write down the highs and lows for the week. At a time like this, it is good to think about the things we are grateful for. It is also a time to recognise things that are hard.

Complete the task by following these steps.
1. Write down 3 things you are grateful for. Make sure you use full sentences to explain your thinking
a) NZ cricket captain Kane Williamson has written a cool letter to those health workers – this might be good to read to get some examples. CLICK HERE
2. Write down 3 things that have been lows this week.
a) They might be things you have found hard etc.

If you think you might need to talk to someone about your lows we encourage you to do so – this might be parents, extended family, or teacher or a friend. Remember you can call people on the phone.

Today we are going to read the Kiwi Kids News Feature Article. Each week our writer Hannah writes a more in-depth article. This week she wrote a great article around how important each one of us is.

# WRITING – Write a letter

Today you are going to write a letter to someone important to you. Thursday 26th March is the first day of New Zealand’s lockdown. For many people that means they will not be able to see their love ones for a while. That doesn’t mean we can’t stay in touch through email.

a) Introduce yourself
b) explain what you have planned the next few weeks while at home.
c) remember to ask them questions – that way you will get a reply.
3. It might be a good idea to add a couple of pictures in your letter.

Today is Wednesday 25th March, 2020. In our learning today we are going to read a couple of poems, write our own poem and continue our work on percentages.

Today we are going to read a little poetry. Poems are awesome ways to express yourself and explain how you are feeling.

1. Your task today is to read a selection of poetry. We suggest around 15 minutes of reading time. We have some resources listed below;
2. Once you read at least three poems, select the best line or the best word from each poem. Write these on your worksheet or book.
This is a good way to look at the way the author has used words and phrases.
