The Black Caps have lost the first of five one-day internationals (ODIs) against India, beaten by five wickets at Eden Park in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on 4 November 2026.
India’s captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bowl first. New Zealand were bowled out for just 185, with almost 10 of their 50 overs still unused.
Tim Seifert top-scored with 38, while last man Blair Tickner hit 34. India’s Arshdeep Singh took four wickets.
Rain stopped play twice during India’s reply, so their target was reset to 143 using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, a maths formula used when a game is shortened. Star batter Virat Kohli made 74 from just 51 balls, the day before his 38th birthday, as India won with plenty of overs to spare.
Kohli also took a diving one-handed catch to get Nathan Smith out.
The Black Caps were without top batters Rachin Ravindra, Mark Chapman and Devon Conway, who was hurt in a training collision with Matt Henry. The loss follows India’s 3-2 win in the T20 series.
The second game is in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington on Saturday 7 November, and the last two are at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on 13 and 15 November.
