Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has met face-to-face with United States President Donald Trump for the first time during a special dinner at the APEC Summit in South Korea.

The leaders shared a light-hearted moment before the dinner began, with President Trump jokingly complimenting Luxon’s hairstyle, saying, “Your hair is beautiful.” This came after Luxon mentioned that South Korean President Lee Jae Myung had teased him about it earlier.

Although they had spoken on the phone before, this was their first in-person meeting. Luxon said their discussion focused on strengthening the relationship between New Zealand and the United States, though he didn’t share specific details. He did mention that both countries clearly understand each other’s positions on trade tariffs.

During the dinner, hosted by President Lee, President Trump also spoke warmly about New Zealand, calling it a “beautiful place” and saying he remembered visiting it many years ago.

Other world leaders at the event included those from Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Canada, and Australia. President Trump is also scheduled to meet with China’s President Xi Jinping later this week to talk about trade.

The APEC Summit is a major event where leaders from around the Asia-Pacific region meet to discuss economic and political issues that affect their countries.
