Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has apologised for his initial handling of the Auckland floods last week.

In a recorded video on YouTube, Brown acknowledged he made mistakes on Friday night. He admitted he “dropped the ball” in his handling of the response to the record rainfall.

“I was too slow to be seen. The communications weren’t fast enough, including mine. I am sorry.”

The Auckland Council and Brown have faced criticism over the time taken for the state of emergency to be declared. Heavy rain started falling on Friday morning but it wasn’t until 10 pm that a State of Emergency was declared.

The huge amount of rain broke numerous records resulting in three deaths.
