Eleven-year-old Ava McDonald has published her first book, a science-fiction adventure called The Moon Crystal. She began the story by writing it out by hand, chapter by chapter, until it grew into a full-length novel.
Ava’s handwritten manuscript ended up about 113 pages long, with 31 chapters.
The book follows a girl named Ava who becomes connected to a powerful and mysterious crystal. What starts as an ordinary school story grows into a huge adventure with aliens, spaceships, robots and faraway planets. Ava must fight to protect the Moon Crystal from a character called Queen Sirentade.
Once Ava had finished writing, her family worked together to turn her story into a real book. They learned how to edit, format and design a cover, while making sure to keep Ava’s own voice in the story.
Ava’s dad, Gregory McDonald, said the story and characters all belong to Ava. “The story, characters and imagination belong to Ava,” he said.
The Moon Crystal is now available as an eBook and paperback, and Ava hopes it shows other kids that they don’t have to wait until they’re grown up to become an author.
