India is holding the world’s largest census to count and learn about its people. More than a billion people will be asked questions about their homes, jobs, education and daily lives. It is India’s first population count in more than 15 years.
A census is like counting everyone in a country and asking them the same important questions. People may be asked about their roof, internet access, phones, food and toilets. The answers help the government understand how people are living.
India’s census must cover 36 states and territories. It also includes thousands of towns and nearly 640,000 villages. Workers called enumerators and supervisors will go door to door to collect information.
For the first time, India’s census will be carried out digitally using mobile apps. The information will help leaders plan services, housing and funding. India’s last census was in 2011, so officials say updated information is important.
