Netflix has officially announced that a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is being made. The news came just days before the Oscars, where the film is up for two awards: best animated feature and best original song.
One of the film’s directors, Maggie Kang, shared the news on social media. She said there is much more to explore in the world of the story and called this new film “only the beginning”. However, Netflix has not revealed the plot yet, and there is still no release date.
Maggie Kang has said before that she wants any sequel to feel special and worth making. She has also explained that she would like to tell viewers more about Zoey and Mira’s backstory.
Singer Ejae, who performs Rumi’s singing voice and helped write songs for the film, hopes the sequel will show even more styles of Korean music. She said she would love audiences to see more sides of Korea through the new film.
The original movie has already been a huge success. Its song Golden has been watched more than one billion times on YouTube, while songs by the fictional Saja Boys have also become very popular. The first film tells the story of Rumi, Mira and Zoey, members of Huntr/x, who are pop stars in the daytime and demon fighters at night.
