New Zealand’s women’s hockey team, the Black Sticks, pulled off a stunning 5-4 penalty shootout win against Australia to book their spot in next year’s Hockey World Cup.
The final match of the Oceania Cup series was a tense battle. Australia led 1-0 until the fourth quarter, when New Zealand scored a late goal to tie the game and send it into a dramatic shootout.
Goalkeeper Grace O’Hanlon made a brilliant save during the shootout, helping New Zealand win the series 2-1. She said the team was “on cloud nine” after scoring all five of their penalty shots.
“This has been building for a long time,” O’Hanlon said. “We’ve worked really hard, and now it’s finally paying off.”
The Black Sticks, ranked 10th in the world, had already won the first game in Darwin. Australia, ranked 5th, took the second game, setting up a winner-takes-all decider.
New Zealand’s coach, Phil Burrows, a former Black Sticks men’s player, told the team to play with confidence and freedom — and they delivered.
O’Hanlon called the victory a huge moment for the team and said they planned to celebrate the win well into the night.
This exciting victory means the Black Sticks will compete at the World Cup in 2026 — and they’ll go there with strong belief and momentum.
