U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, once close political allies, are now publicly at odds after a dramatic falling-out this week. The two had worked closely for months, with Musk supporting Trump’s policies and contributing nearly $300 million to his campaign efforts. But disagreements over a major spending bill and a key government appointment caused their relationship to collapse.
The trouble began when Musk criticised Trump’s newest tax and spending bill, calling it wasteful and damaging. Trump, at first, stayed quiet, hoping to keep Musk’s support for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. But after Musk attacked the bill again online, Trump decided to strike back.
From the Oval Office, Trump said he was “very disappointed” in Musk and later threatened to cancel Musk’s government contracts. In response, Musk hinted at forming a new political party and even supported a call for Trump’s impeachment on social media.
This split shocked many in Washington. Just last week, Trump had praised Musk at a White House event. Now, Trump’s team says no talks are planned with Musk, and the two haven’t spoken since the dispute began.
One big reason for the fight was Trump’s decision to cancel the nomination of Jared Isaacman, Musk’s pick to lead NASA. Musk saw this as a personal betrayal. White House staff had already been limiting Musk’s influence in government decisions before this.
Musk’s criticism may hurt Trump’s fundraising and support among young voters and tech donors.
