The New Zealand Black Ferns began their international rugby season with a strong 38-12 win over the Australian Wallaroos at McDonald Jones Stadium.

With this victory, the Black Ferns kept the Laurie O’Reilly Cup and extended their winning streak against Australia to 28 matches.

New Zealand took control early, leading 26-0 just after halftime. Australian players tried to fight back in the second half, scoring two tries, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. The Black Ferns added two more late tries to secure the win.

Winger Ayesha Leti-I’iga and newcomer Braxton Sorensen-McGee each scored two tries. Sorensen-McGee made a strong debut, showing speed and smart plays from the back. Other standout players included Layla Sae, Sylvia Brunt, and Amy du Plessis, who helped control the game in the middle of the field.

The Wallaroos struggled in the first half, especially with handling errors. However, players like Siokapesi Palu and Ashley Marsters helped lift their team’s performance in the second half. Despite the improvement, the Black Ferns’ strong defence and late scoring sealed the match.

The Black Ferns now return home to face Canada next week. Meanwhile, the Wallaroos will take on the USA in their next match.

This game also marked the first match in the Pacific Four Series, part of both teams’ preparations for the Rugby World Cup in England this August.
