The Black Sticks women have won the Nations Cup hockey tournament in Chile after a thrilling final against Ireland.
New Zealand claimed victory in a shootout after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time. This win was a turnaround from their earlier pool play loss to Ireland.
Emelia Surridge gave New Zealand an early lead by scoring in the first few minutes. Ireland fought back, equalising in the final quarter. The match then went to a shootout, where the Black Sticks held their nerve to secure the win.
Player of the game Holly Pearson praised the team’s progress. “As a young, inexperienced group, to win today is really special,” she said.
This victory makes New Zealand eligible for promotion to the FIH Hockey Pro League. It also boosts their confidence as they prepare for World Cup qualification against Australia in August. The Black Sticks women missed out on the last Olympics, but this win shows they are on the rise again.
