Bryony Botha breaks Cycling World Record

New Zealand cyclist Bryony Botha set a new world record in the 4000m individual pursuit at the UCI Oceania Track Championships in Brisbane, Australia.

Botha completed the race in 4 minutes and 31.446 seconds, passing her competitors and marking a historic moment in women’s cycling. The race took place at the Anna Meares Velodrome, where Botha outpaced teammate Emily Shearman and Australia’s Maeve Plouffe, who finished second and third.

This year marks the first time women are competing in the 4000m distance for the individual pursuit, matching the men’s event, as it was previously a 3000m race for women.

The New Zealand cycling team has submitted Botha’s time for official recognition as a world record. She will compete in the gold medal final, where she could potentially improve her record-breaking time.
