American Airlines is trying out new technology at three airports to prevent passengers from boarding ahead of their assigned group.
The trial is taking place at Albuquerque International Sunport, New Mexico, Tucson International Airport, Arizona, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Virginia.
The system works by alerting gate agents with a sound if someone scans their boarding pass too early. If this happens, the agent politely asks the passenger to wait for their group’s turn. The goal is to make boarding smoother and ensure fair treatment for all passengers.
In cases where passengers need to board early—such as traveling with a friend who has priority boarding—the gate agent can override the alert and let them through. American Airlines said it’s happy with the system’s progress so far, though it’s still being tested.
This new technology helps staff manage boarding better while giving passengers a fair and organised experience.
