Luuka Jones, New Zealand’s 35-year-old canoeist, paddled her heart out but missed out on a medal in the women’s canoe slalom K1 event. Despite recording her fastest run in the final, Jones incurred two time penalties that placed her eighth overall.
Jones, who won a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, hoped to repeat her success. Her final time was 102.33 seconds, but hitting the second gate cost her crucial time. Australian Jessica Fox won the event with a time of 96.08 seconds.
Reflecting on her performance, Jones expressed disappointment, saying, “Not putting it all together today was disappointing. Hitting that gate was a big ‘what if’.”
In the semi-finals, Jones performed well, clocking 104.91 seconds without penalties, ensuring her spot in the final. The fastest semi-finalist was Germany’s Ricarda Funk with 99.31 seconds.
Now, Jones is gearing up for the kayak cross event, hoping to channel her disappointment into determination for a strong performance.
