“The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale” will open at Auckland’s Civic Theatre in November. However, you’ll need to join a waitlist for tickets.

This musical adventure tells the story of The Lord of the Rings from the Hobbits’ perspective. It begins with Bilbo Baggins’ eleventy-first birthday in the Shire, where he gives his nephew Frodo a gold ring. This moment starts Frodo’s dangerous journey across Middle-earth to destroy the ring in the dark land of Mordor, with the help of his friends.

The show features a dynamic, folk-inspired score performed live by the cast, blending original music with the classic tale.

This New Zealand premiere comes just after the 70th anniversary of the first book in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, “The Fellowship of the Ring,” published in 1954.

The production first opened at the Watermill Theatre in the UK to excellent reviews, with The Guardian calling it the “Greatest Show on Middle Earth.” It is also set to open at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in the US this month.

On Saturday morning, a group of students from a Wellington intermediate school collected rubbish from a local beach. They worked for two hours and filled six large bags. The organiser said the clean-up helped protect seabirds and made the beach safer for visitors. Some students noticed many plastic bottles and food wrappers near the rocks. One student commented that the beach looked much better after the clean-up. Another said the event was tiring but worth the effort. The group planned to return next month and continue the work.
