A school worker from Illinois has been sentenced to nine years in jail for stealing $1.5 million worth of chicken wings.

Vera Liddell, 68, carried out this year-long heist from July 2020, using a school cargo van to transport 11,000 cases of chicken wings that were meant for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Liddell, who had worked as the head of food services for a decade, was caught when a business manager noticed that the school’s food budget was $300,000 over during a routine check. The schools were closed due to the pandemic, but meal kits were still being prepared and sent to students learning from home.

Liddell bought the wings using school funds, but the students never received them. She was charged with theft and operating a criminal enterprise and later pleaded guilty.
