I tipu ake a Tweedie i Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, i te whanga o Waihau, i taua wāhi tonu i hopukina ai te kiriata ‘Boy’. Ka mutu, ko Tweedie tētahi o te hunga i te rōpū i hopu i te kiriata ‘Boy’, te kiriata i tuhia rā, i ārahina rā e tōna tungāne, e Taika Waititi! Tētahi whānau waingōhia!

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Did you know that there are four, soon to be five, Disney movies in te reo Māori? But who was the first person to adapt a Disney movie in te reo Māori? Well, her name is Tweedie Waititi and she is the awesome person who has brought almost five Disney movies, in te reo Māori, to the big screen.

Tweedie grew up in Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, at Waihau Bay, the same place that the movie ‘Boy’ was filmed. In fact, Tweedie was part of the crew for the movie ‘Boy’, which was written and directed by Tweedie’s brother, Taika Waititi! What a talented whānau!

Tweedie and her sister-in-law got the idea to adapt the films in te reo Māori from their kids watching Moana on repeat and imagining what it would be like for them to experience it in te reo Māori.

In 2017, Tweedie, with her sister-in-law, started a company called Matewa Media and from there started adapting Disney movies, starting with Moana, followed by Lion King, Frozen, Coco and soon they are starting work on Encanto.

Tweedie has now won many awards, including an Emmy for her work on the transgender series, Rūrangi.
