Aotearoa has a new Prime Minister and Government. On Monday 27th November 2023, Christopher Luxon was sworn in as the Prime Minister during a ceremony in Wellington at Government House. During this ceremony, Luxon had to promise to do the job to his best ability.

Christopher Luxon was born in 1970, in Christchurch and descends from Irish, English and Scottish roots. He spent his younger years living in Christchurch before his whānau moved to Auckland. Luxon returned to Christchurch to go to college and university. Luxon has worked for some big companies like Unilever and Air New Zealand where he learnt all about business before becoming a member of parliament in 2020.

Luxon has a big list of changes he wants to make as Prime Minister, like trying to make things affordable, cracking down on crime, changing what students learn at school, and increasing the amount of police officers in Aotearoa.

Luxon has a team of people helping him. That team includes Winston Peters and David Seymour, who will share the role of Deputy Prime Ministers. For the first 18 months of Luxon’s term of Prime Minister, Winston Peters will be deputy prime minister and then David Seymour will have a turn for 18 months. There are some big changes on the cards for Aotearoa.
