Kīngi Tūheitia Portraiture Award – Giving Māori Artists a National Stage
Entries for the Kīngi Tūheitia Portraiture Award are being accepted until the 23 March 2023. Launched in 2020 by Te Pūkenga Whakaata and the Office of the Kīngitanga, its intention is to inspire emerging Māori artists to create portraits of their tūpuna in any visual medium.

The Kīngi Tūheitia Award not only provides us with an opportunity to showcase our talents on a national platform, but it also allows us to document and acknowledge our tūpuna.

Artists can submit entries of newly created artwork or work that has been completed within the past two years of their tūpuna.

Finalist artwork will be judged by a panel of renowned artists, including well known portrait artist Graham Hoete, better known as “Mr G”. Mr G is a Māori multi-disciplinary artist, based in Pāpāmoa and more popularly known for his large street murals such as his recently completed 5 storey mural of Hana Te Hemara in Ngāmotu.

Shortlisted artwork will be showcased at The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata in Wellington for three weeks during Matariki.
Entries close on 23 March 2023 with winners being announced on the exhibition opening night on Wednesday 24 May 2023.
