Spacecraft pushes Asteroid off course

Scientists have confirmed that a NASA spacecraft successfully changed the path of an asteroid.  NASA conducted this experiment around the Sun during a test designed to help protect Earth.

The experiment began in 2022 when the Dart spacecraft deliberately crashed into a small asteroid called Dimorphos. Researchers from several countries reported the results on Friday after studying the asteroid’s movement. The asteroid was never a danger to Earth, but it was chosen to test how humans might stop a future space rock from hitting our planet.

Dimorphos travels through space with a larger asteroid called Didymos as they orbit the Sun together. After the spacecraft struck Dimorphos, scientists carefully observed how the crash affected its motion. They discovered that the asteroids now complete their journey around the Sun about 0.15 seconds faster than before. The change is tiny, but experts say small shifts made many years in advance could stop a dangerous asteroid from reaching Earth.

The crash also sent huge amounts of rock and dust flying into space. This debris added extra force that pushed the asteroid even more than the spacecraft alone. Researchers estimate that about 16 million kilograms of material were blasted away during the impact.

Even with the new path, the asteroids remain safely far from Earth. Scientists say the experiment provides valuable information for future missions that may one day protect the planet.
