Kua whiwhi a Ahorangi Rangiānehu Mātāmua, nō Tūhoe, ki te tohu Te Pou Whakarae o Aotearoa mō tana hāpai i te kaupapa o Matariki.

Ka whakanui Ngā Tohu Pou Kōhure o Aotearoa i ngā tāngata e mahi ana i ā rātou mahi hei painga mō Aotearoa whānui.

Mā āna mahi rangahau e hāpai nei i te tuku i ngā kōrero mō Matariki ki te iwi.  I ēnei mahi āna kua puta mai tāna pukapuka, Matariki: Te Whetū Tapu o te Tau, i whakaputaina rā i te reo Māori me te reo Pākehā. Kua puta mai hoki tana hōtaka ipurangi me tana whārangi pae pāpāho pāpori, ā, katoa ēnei ka kawe i ō tātou mātauranga e pā ana ki te ao Māori ki tua. Kua oho katoa ngā taupori o te motu, me ngā taupori o tāwāhi, i ōna mātauranga e pā ana ki te tātai arorangi.

Ko Rangi Mātāmua te Māori tuatahi i whakawhiwhia ki Te Puiaki Whakapā Pūtaiao a te Pirimia, ka noho hoki a ia hei hoa mō Te Apārangi. I whakaingoa hoki ia hei kaiwhiwhi i ngā tohu ā te Kīngi i te tau 2023, ka mutu i kopoua a Rangi Mātāmua hei Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, mō āna mahi tātai arorangi.

Rangi Mātāmua – New Zealander of the Year 2023

Professor Rangiānehu Mātāmua, of Tūhoe decent, has been named Te Pou Whakarae o Aotearoa/New Zealander of the Year for his work on Matariki.

The Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards or Ngā Tohu Pou Kōhure o Aotearoa celebrates people who are making a positive impact and passionate about making Aotearoa a better place.

Mātāmua is helping people understand more about Matariki through his research, which has led to a bestselling book, Matariki: The Star of the Year, published both in te reo Māori and English, a web series and social media profile, has been ground-breaking in terms of its contribution to mātauranga Māori; he has enlightened both national and international populations on the mātauranga of astronomy.

Mātāmua is the first Māori to receive the Prime Minister’s Science Prize, is a fellow of The Royal Society Te Apārangi, and in the 2023 New Year Honours, Mātāmua was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to Māori astronomy.

Mātāmua is also part of a wider movement, reclaiming Indigenous astronomy as part of a continued process of decolonisation.
