New Zealand’s government has promised to give another $16 million to help Ukraine. This brings New Zealand’s total support to over $130 million since 2022. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters announced this during Luxon’s visit to the United States.

Luxon will meet Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Friday. Leaders from Japan, Korea, and Australia will also join the meeting in Washington, D.C. They will discuss how to support Ukraine together.

This promise comes after Russia attacked a children’s hospital in Kyiv and other places, killing at least 36 people. Luxon condemned the attacks and said New Zealand stands with Ukraine.

The new $16 million includes $6 million for military help and $10 million for humanitarian aid to assist people in Ukraine and nearby countries. Some of the military money will support healthcare for Ukrainian soldiers and improve drone technology, led by the UK and Latvia.

Prime Minister Luxon said that even though New Zealand is far from Ukraine, the war affects everyone. Foreign Affairs Minister Peters said Russia’s invasion breaks international law and criticized Russia’s actions at the United Nations.

New Zealand will also announce new sanctions against people and organizations supporting Russia’s military.
