Civil Defence teams are working hard today to check the damage to homes and help residents in the Nelson Tasman area after heavy flooding. The region is still under a state of emergency, and more than 350 homes are without electricity.
The flooding has badly affected farms and orchards in Wai-iti, Dovedale, Tapawera, and Ngatimoti. Many roads remain closed, making travel difficult. Tasman’s mayor described the situation as moving from a simple clean-up to a full rebuild effort.
Power outages are also affecting other parts of the country. On Banks Peninsula, thousands of homes are without power. In the North Island, about 320 households, including 232 in Whanganui, are still waiting for electricity to be restored.
In Porirua, near Wellington, a landslide struck an accommodation building on Acheron Road, forcing people to evacuate. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but other nearby homes on Walker Avenue are also at risk.
Further south, in Mārahau, forestry waste known as “slash” covered a hillside and nearby properties after the Mārahau River overflowed on Friday. Roads to the town are blocked by fallen trees and slips. A helicopter was sent to check on people who were cut off.
Emergency services are continuing to work across the country to restore power and keep people safe. Updates are being shared on the radio and online as the situation develops.
